I have heard that Macau is not too safe in the dark. Many Triads about since its a mecca for many going over there for gambling and other late night exotic entertainment.

    Views anyone.

    TO vs. HK

Well I think I'm in the best position to add some feedback to your thoughts. I'm guessing that you're from TO as well, or else you comments would mean that you thought Toronto had the second most perverts in the world (in which case, screw you cuz I'm from TO and I live in HK). Hong Kong's definitely safe, locals have funkier hairdos (by Canadian standards) and a good number of them have dyed blonde hair (and it gets pretty conspicuous when you're Chinese). Tubes and tanks are everywhere when you go out and the party scene is definitely chill. C'mon over, have a great summer! KGL

    Don't think so...

I've been in Hong Konk on and off since 97. This time I am trying to create a life for myself here. When I was here in my younger days my parents had no objections to letting my sister and I roam the streets in weekend outing unattended. I was about 16 or 17 at the time. Hong Kong is one of the most inviting, non-intimidating places in the world. Really. Yes, there is a presence of police that to me is quite intruding in nature but it's for your protection. Gangs I have heard of but have never seen. To be honest I would stop speaking with whatever self proclaimed experts you have been speaking with. Hong Kong is very beautiful. I love it here.

    Thumbs up

Hong Kong is conservativ in some ways (for example, your lesbian gangsters might find more acceptance in Shanghai - the lesbian that is - not the gangster). On the other hand, it is an extremely fashion conscious place and that doen't mean haut couture. People put together there own wierd and wonderful ideas of what's cool and it runs the gamut. In general, people are friendly (especially if you learn a word or to of Cantonese) and most seem very careful not to rip you off on your change, etc. (Ripped off on the price, however, is another matter that has to do with bargaining skills and knowing what the market value for this or that might be.)

I highly recommend the experience. Come and enjoy.

    Cheers-
    JJ

So you can see that, whilst it isn't dangerous, educational standards have fallen dramatically in recent years.

    Talking heard the same

I've heard the same stuff as Chandelier - except the fashion tips for being a gangster.

But it seems those observations are 30 years old. Suffice to say, from this thread and otherwise, HK is quite safe.

Keep in mind there are a looooot of people out on the streets, so of course things happen. But for the number of people out there, it's very safe. The streets are well lit and cleaner, and the biggest common crime is the pushing and shoving people experience in the MTR and out crossing the street.

The propagation of HK's crime rate is 30 years old, but still fresh in the minds of those who are still scared. Also some people confuse HK with Beijing and Bangkok. Not to say crime is particularly high there - they have at some times in their recent history. Here, as fact, there used to be gropings happening on the Public Transportation and I still have family warning me about a bunch of things. That people will slip drugs into my drink and rob me and my house. And they tell me about pick pockets who will slice your pants to take your wallet.

You should still be careful for pick pockets, but I doubt you need to bring a portable sewing kit everywhere you go.
