You said it, Mr. Know-It-All! Hong Kong people are downright rude. Period. End of story. They think that they are the best in the world. They are so impatient, as though they own time. Maybe it's because not all of them had the privilege to get good education?!

That's too bad, you seem to have encountered all the rude people during your stay. Try not to generalize however, rude people aren't restricted to the more or less educated, rich or poor.

Red face courtesy of hong kong people

    hi, everybody,

it's my first time to be here ! nice to meet u all !

i just found this website this morning, in fact i am a local here. after reading all the comments fr u regarding the captioned and i was surprised that the image of chinese people for all of u is so bad !!!!

(as my english isnt very well, hope all of u fully understand !)

can i say something if u dont mind ?

actually not all the local are so impolite, some of them just couldnt have good education in hk within their grow-up time ! in fact the quality of hong kong educational system isnt good enough as i am one of the victims, most of the local agreed with that and if they are rich people, they must already sent their children to foreign countries to improve !!!! for example, i really love to meet new friends who are foreigners. but i am shame as my english couldnt speak very well !!!! do u know what was my experiences in the past when i had lessons in the school !!!!!!!!

the teachers didnt teach u knowledges fr the english book, they just loudly repeatly said the content of the book !!!!! that's all !!!!!! they didnt expain anything !!!!!!!!!! could i ask how can i learn better and try to improve my english ?

may be u think i can find other professional english learning school outside, but do u know in the past, most of hk families were poor, parents just could support the normal living, that's all, how could we have money to do this ? that period of time, i was just a kid, couldnt work !!!!!! how can i find money to improve it !!!!!! and many parents in hk, all they can do are working everyday with long period of time !!!!!!! and also, everybody just spoke cantonese, that's all, how can i find a way to practice !!!!!!!!!

in fact it is nearly within these ten years the atmosphere is changed and more popular to speaks english and mandarin !!!!! before the common language in hk is cantonese.....

as most of the parents in hk are under educated, how can they know and can teach their children to become a good guy on courtesy ?

hope everybody can have a new concept to see hk people, thanks very much for reading .

Personally, I have found Hong Kongers to be friendly (with the exception of a small group at work who seem out for blood. The viciousness and small minded cruelty of this group is a real lesson for a west coast kinda new age guy who has a belief in the goodness of people).

On my first trip here, in 8 days, 6 people stopped to offer help, 2 of these actually loaned me their mobiles to make a quick call. Taxi drivers (and I have met a lot in the last 3 years) have been great with only 2 exceptions. People in shops have been generally helpful - and friendly. I have mastered saying : I would like to learn Cantonese but it's dificult. Saying that in Cantonese has opened doors WIDE.

Love HK. BTW, age 50, exec type, living in Mongkok for a real experience of the place.

I've been in hk for about 4 months and worked here for a week already. I haven't found one hostile person here yet. The only ppl who I've found that can be hostile are kids. But that's it. Everyone else is pretty civilized. Well there is this one guy, but he realizes that what he does is wrong anyway. In fact, HK ppl are really funny. Say funny things and do funny things. I just find it all amusing. Even that guy who tries to be hostile.

To those ppl complaining, who cares if other ppl seem rude? Why make such a big deal about such small things. Focus on the important things in life.

I've bumped into ppl and accidentally stepped on the back of their shoes and I say sorry, but they don't even care. Nobody cares about such small issues.

I just got a job offer in the states that pays 2.5x more than what I make here, so will be leaving soon. I'm gonna really miss the vibrance of HK ppl here.

I think ppl are rude here but in different ways than they are in the UK. For instance shop assisstants in the UK are downright grumpy and won't help you unlike in HK, but in HK ppl will push you out of the way and won't hold doors open.

Although like anywhere, there are the good and the bad. Today I saw a woman push her way through ppl on a crowded MTR in order to get a seat - she got an earful for it from another Chinese lady.

Oh KnowItAll, I soooo agree with you that expats are rude in HK, especially the Americans. They're just all so uptight. I'm from America and I've never met such rude Americans until I went to HK. Anyways, Geordie19, I think shop asisstants in the UK are very helpful. ha but I am the shopping kind.
By the way, i guess the truth is there are rude people EVERYWHERE! And there are also a lot of nice people too.
