    Etiquette of Hong Kong People

On many travels to Hong Kong, I often hear of fellow travellers that the chinese people in Hong Kong are downright rude.

I have travelled to Malaysia, Thailand and Singapore and the people there are pleasant and helpful.

    What's the views here.

Everyone is rude in Hong Kong. End of story...

From the prissy expat housewife who is rude to her domestic helper to the lowly underemployed english football fan who just wants to beat someone up at one of the brit pubs.

What makes the difference is that HK is far better than a lot of other places I've travelled to... specially London, where if you get decent service, you can almost expect the person serving you to be an emigrant.

    Get used to it ...

Stand outside [or in this climate inside] a building with a glass door at the entrance. Many a hilarious minute can be passed without resorting to the 'phone fiddle' in just watching what happens when a person is trying to enter while at the same time another is trying to exit. Invariably moments are spent as each tries not to be a door man and also be the first through. The same happens in lifts were people will get in and stand at the front even before others have got out. Now is this rudeness or mere the Hong Kong way? Well opinion is still divided.

Another strange habit of many is to continually look back whence they came from. I initially thought that they would be checking if I was following them, but no, I have bumped into many a person coming round a corner while looking the other way.

The last rudeness I will deal with today is the invisibility of non chinese. Even my Chinese friends are unable to recognise me if coming upon me unexpectedly. Just how invisible I am is apparent on days when I dont feel like making way and opening doors and just walk in a straight line-I will bump into around 10 persons a minute and a person I bump into will know s/he has been bumped big time.
That many know how to maintain a semblence of politeness is apparent on a visit to Discovery Bay. A Lot of door holding and 'after you' goes on here and rarely will there be bumping-I wonder why? Something in the water perhaps

I also find the chinese people from New Territories are not tactful. They always talk behind your back.

I don't know but maybe its a minority.

    Hong Kong is Hostile!

I get bumped and knocked all the time along the streets and hardly anyone says sorry. Only twice I was apologised to and I was so surprised that I said thank you!

Hong Kong is definately one of the most rude countries I have been to in Asia. As I was strolling along the conjested streets of Bangkok yesterday, not a single soul tried to walk into my way or insist that he should walk through that door first.

Really glad to be out of HK - Hostile Kingdom...finally...

HK is the most densely populated city in the world. What do you expect when you have all these people?

Obviously you've not dealt with the taxi drivers in Bangkok.

Complaining about HK, which is becoming more and more sanitized as we speak (I don't even remember the last time someone called me an "ah-cha") is .. oh-so-'90s.

At this moment, I spend most of my time whinging about Bangkok.

Well, I have only lived in Bangkok for 5 years, Beijing for 4 years, Vietnam for 3 years and traveled extensively all over Asia, but Hong Kong is STILL on top of my list for housing the most rude people in Asia.

And yes, some taxi drivers can be mean in Bangkok, but you should have tried those in Beijing back in 1997!!

And yes, HK may be extremely densely populated, but no excuse for being rude in such a well educated country!!

Anyway, there are good and bad things in all countries, Hong Kong is just not my cup of tea
