Yes, I thought that was the subtext as well, so I was getting ready for some diatribe about how freedom is a Western concept and so all us Westerners should shut up or go home...

People in china are starting to have more material possessions ("comfort") but have no rights to free speech nor democracy nor even the right to leave the country without permission (so no "freedom"). If I couch the question in this way, I choose freedom every time. But I wonder what a chinese person would choose, who perhaps never had any freedom and does not miss it?
Unless mistaken they can leave the country without permission for the following countries:
    Burundi
    Comoros
    Thailand
    Cambodia
    Indonesia
    Malaysia
    Bahrain
    Djibouti
    Kenya
    Madgascar
    Malawi
    Mozambique
    Sao Tome and Principe
    Seychelles
    Tanzania
    Togo
    Uganda
    Azerbaijan
    Georgia
    Iran
    Iraq
    Jordan
    Laos

What's the point of having just freedom and no comfort and then what's just comfort without any freedom...?
