High priority shipping ($9,000 USD insured) going into Hong Kong — Will I get hit by customs?

    Hello,

I'm helping a mate ship a high-priority package with electronics (most new, some used) into Hong Kong and was wondering what's the best approach for this? It's not crazy time-sensitive, but would need to get there within 1-2 weeks.

The package is about 2 ft. x 1 ft. x 1ft. and weighs approximately 12 lbs., with signature confirmation and about $9,000 insured.

I've contacted some couriers like FedEx and DHL and was able to get some discounted rates, but it makes me wonder whether there's a better alternative with a lesser known courier.

But mostly, I was concerned with customs. I've heard that Hong Kong customs does not typically impose duties, but was wondering if anyone can enlighten me on the subject a bit more?

FedEx / DHL / UPS have it all perfected. The local air freight companies might give you a better rate on the per KG charges, but they'll nickle and dime you to death ... "x-ray charge, handling charge, butt scratching charge...".

Oh and if you'd like to have your package tracked check with your discounted carriers what tracking they offer. Generally fall far short for me to want to risk anything with them.

That sized package from the US should not be more than $200-250 for 3 day overnight?

    Dear shri,

It's shipping in from Canada.. I've been quoted for around $200-300, but to get it insured, it skyrockets close to the $600 range. I'm inclined to pay, but if customs is going to impose duties on it, I may need to find another alternatively.

Most of the goods are family purchased goods I was supposed to bring down when I came back last week, but all the orders missed its its arrival date, so I'm left with all this..

There are no duties in Hong Kong except on liquor (over 30% alcohol content) and tobacco.
