The South China Morning Post launches Project Shield - a campaign to provide every doctor, nurse and medical worker in Hong Kong hospitals dealing with Sars wards with the protective suits they need to guard them against infection.
The South China Morning Post, responding to concerns expressed by medical staff over the level of protective equipment available to them, aims to rally donations from businesses and the community to provide up to 10,000 disposable protective suits a day to hospitals.
SCMP donated the first 1,000 and this has been matched by the makers of the special suit DuPont.
The disposable outfits, which cost HK$25 each, are already being trialled in the Sars wards of Hong Kong's Prince of Wales Hospital in Shatin and Alice Ho Miu Ling Nethersole Hospital in Tai Po. Nurses wear two suits a day and doctors discard the outfits every time they finish their rounds.
Project Shield aims first to make the suits available to everyone in the front line of the Sars wards of any Hong Kong hospital and then for anyone in other departments of hospitals affected by the disease.
The protective outfits will be passed over to the Hospital Authority which will distribute them to Sars wards around the territory.
Dr Ko Wing Man, Director (Professional Service and Public Affairs) said: "We are being faced with a new virus, and hence manpower, treatment module and medication are under immense pressure and challenge. We are very grateful that the South China Morning Post is joining hands with other committed organisations to show their support to public hospitals."
