Bag left in taxi - any ideas?

Friend of mine left his bag (containing passport, money, computer and stuff) in a taxi last night. Has contacted taxi authority, police ... nothing yet ... does anyone else have any ideas of what he can do? Any chance of it coming back?

There is a taxi service lost and found they say to call their 24 hour hotline +852 1872 920

from this site Hong Kong Taxis & Cab Fares - Hong Kong Tourism Board

I had a friend leave his passport in a taxi, the driver dropped it off at the pickup point (which was my residence) but since they didnt recognise my friend as a resident they handed it in to the local police station. I've heard of a couple of other cases of lost items in taxis making their way to the local police station, but it depends where they discover the item.

There is always the chance that he wont get it back.

I'm quite absent-minded and do this occasionally and in my experience, nine times out of ten you will get a call from the local police station where the taxi driver dropped it off in a day or two.

Others on here have said that they never get things back and that taxi drivers are all dishonest ragamuffins who run an evil briefcase smuggling consortium.

So everyone has a different experience I guess.

In addition to what has been suggested already . . .

Passport = Contact the consulate of the country that issued it. Perhaps the passport made its way there.

Here's the rub though . . . if the person who found the bag wanted to keep the goodies (i.e. computer, cash, etc.), he/she isn't going to return to passport. It'll probably be an all or nothing recovery. And with the goodies so easily liquidated, I'd guess nothing.

If this was London, you would have no chance of recovering it here. This happened to a friend and the taxi man returned it to the police station. Fingers crossed!

He's done all of the stuff mentioned. And agrees about the annoying fact that the goodies to steal are probably going to mean nobody wants to hand in the passport!

Thanks for that. Yes, I'll take your advice; no more leaving stuff in taxis for me thanks to WMDS' advice. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for any more pearls of wisdom that you may have to share..

To be honest, I'm with WDMS! I can understand leaving a phone if it fell out of a pocket, or one item if you have a big pile of stuff and it's all a struggle ... but just to get in with a single bag and leave without it??????? Bizarre
