Cheap HK bosses upset by $160 month raise to maids

Seriously how cheap are these knuckle-dragging miserable excuses for human beings, when $160 a month is reason to whine and complain.

I have to love this quote from today's SCMP...minus the bracketed explanation that was added. Truly poetic when you read it in its original.

Joseph Law, chairman of the Hong Kong Employers of Overseas Domestic Helpers Association, said the increase was unreasonable. "If the wage continues to be increased next year, some employers might start to think [about doing housework] by themselves," he said.

Whilst we are posting amusing comments, here's another one from yesterdays Standard from Federation of Trade Unions lawmaker Wong Kwok-hing. He is complaining about how noisy it is inside the MTR train compartments and how something needs to be done to reduce noise inside the compartments:

"The noise problem is disturbing. Some passengers spend 30 minutes to an hour inside the train on a single trip. It is hard for them to talk on their mobile phones since it is too noisy inside the compartment," he said.

Wouldn't you rather allow HK's lowest paid local workers the ability to be able to save $3580.00 per month ? You know the ones, they serve you at the bars, restaurants and cafes etc who earn $8000 per month and out of that have to manage paying for a roof over their heads, clothing, food, commuting costs etc, literally living a pay cheque to pay cheque existence.

While the domestic helpers get a roof over their head, all of their food, utility costs and so on provided, while being able to save 36,000HKD per annum....If you want to spit venom at anybody, maybe you should focus on the Philippines/Indonesian governments and ask them to explain why, that in the 21st century that they cant provide their people with first world wages, so the majority of people don't have to work abroad to feed their family. If that's your issue...

In my opinion there are more worthy needy ( local citizens of this city ) that really are doing it tough, than the domestic helpers that came here to work on their own free will.

Seriously, aim your vented spleen at the govts that get fat off this situation, their GDP breakdown spells a pretty clear picture of how they financially survive, all off the backs of exported, low paid workers, while the members of these governments sit back and eat cake... These helpers seem to be able to own their own homes back in the Philippines also, because while the wife might be working here, the husband could be in Saudi Arabia or Dubai also earning OS income, while their children are being looked after by family that they support. That's around 50 - 70K saved each year combined....

Assuming, and we all know this isn't true, the maids work 40 hours a day for 5 days a week, or 160 hours per month, this averages out to a dollar an hour. Of course they work much longer hours, many not even given their required day off. Seriously the HK government really should do more to protect these exploited workers, but who are we kidding. This is Asia's World City after all, they have to protect their reputation for laissez-faire non-interference. Putzes.

Um...you point out the case of the many poor local workers earning barely enough to survive, then ask why the gov'ts of the Phils and Indo don't do something to bring their countries into line with the 21st century? Perhaps the HK gov't could do the same? Oh and introduce decent childcare so the helpers are not required.

the Reason stated by the philipines maid organisation for demanding an increase is inflation.
True there is inflation but most of it beared by the bosses. Maids do not have much costs of living in Hong Kong. All of it is paid by the bosses. All they got to pay is their lunch for $30 once a week.

"some employers might start to think [about doing housework] by themselves,"

Though this guy is paid to defend his 'members' but it just defy's logic. Especially when these 'employers' drop $160 easily on lunch most days.

    Ehrrr
most ppl in HK who employ helpers are NOT expat
Most are middle class HKongers who live in 500 sqf flat with one or two kids and do NOT spend 160 on a lunch
