In addition to my nightmare with British Gas, I am currently engaged in a dispute with PCCW who have unilaterally changed all my plans and sent me an inflated bill. Luckily I pay them by cheque so they can simply go stuff themselves. If I had autopay, they would have had my money already.

yes, $200 is not a lot to most people. it could also be a cash flow issue. would you cash advance $200 from a credit card if you maxed out all your credit facility?

Same story with NowTV automatically renewing my contract but dropping all the discounted prices and charging full price - they reversed it after one angry phone call but still... why give these kind of companies the keys to your bank account? They have proven over and over that they are not to be trusted.
From memory a few years California Gym also had quite a reputation for continuing to debit your account after written termination. There were so many complaints that it hit the mainstream press. Don't know if things have changed there now, but I doubt it.

PCCW/NowTv etc-one of the most ethical, trustworthy, honest and reputable companies in the world deceiving a customer??

    I can't believe it.

This is another area where consumers are totally screwed in HK, due to total lack of decent consumer laws, re Autopay.

In the UK, there is something called the direct debit guarantee, which curtains this sort of practice.

I admit I'm one of those who absolutely hates having autopay link to my bank account.

Credit card, Electricity, Gas, Now TV/Broadband, Water done at ATM or 7/11

    I know sounds freakin crazy

I have no cash flow problem and don't live cheque to cheque, had bad experience with NOW TV couple of years back via autopay.

If you don't use autopay, there are other reasonably convenient ways to pay your bills... and 7eleven isn't one of them! I use pps online. It's very easy to pay and you get a neat record of all your bill payments in one place.

    Never had autopay either.

My electricity and mobile phone bills are paid through online banking and the rest of the telecom/internet/utility companies receive a cheque in the post.
