    Hello,
I have been living in Hong Kong for awhile now and only just found out about this site the other day. I find it a challenge to make new friends locally because I do not speak Cantonese. I am 22 years old and I am always up for meeting new people.

    Cheers Emma

    Hey Ppl,

I'll be heading over to HK in a couple of days and just seeing who's free to get together and hang out. I'm there to relax and do touristy things so if you're interested give me a shout. I'm 24, fem and that's pretty much it!

if u find it difficult to meet people or make friends with local.. maybe u should try speaking softer and slower. most locals tend to feel intimidated talking to foreigners because their english is not as good. westerners tend to talk loud and clear, whereas asians usually talk softer,, in english that is. also , what about doing things that u r interested? like signing up for volunteering work or something.. u r bound to meet people that share the same interest with u.
    enjoy life in hk.

It can be hard to make friends in Hong Kong. Here are some possible explanations:-

1, Most HK people live in apartment blocks and within this group the great majority live in public housing estates. Since the apartments are small, it is not the norm to invite people to your house. In most societies, having friends coming over to your house is actually a good way to socialise but this is not done here often enough.

2, Our friends are usually ones we met during the school or university years. In the office, it is like warzone where co-workers want others to screw-up so that they can be promoted. So, it is hard to make friends in the office. In addition, after a long day in the office, most people want to have some time all to themselves. To alleviate the stress, people here tend to just go shopping because it feels very good to spend money on all kinds of wonderful things we see in the shops.

3, Generally speaking, HKers are paranoid about others. They usually think a stranger is out to hurt them or rip them off. In the non-expat areas, nobody would ever talk with a stranger. In fact, people never talk to strangers in the street. Perhaps one could say that HK people lack the skill and experience to strike a conversation with a complete stranger.

    Anyone agree?

    hey everyone

I just moved to HK from Sydney Australia - first job out of uni...stumbled onto this site while looking for sporting and/or social activities to get involved with to meet more people.

I'm 24 (f), born in HK but lived in Oz all my life. I speak cantonese, mandarin, bit of taiwanese and japanese...love sports, reading, travel etc

Very keen to make new friends here!

    Cheers
