    Preparation for an apocalypse

Does anyone else regularly consider a situation where some humongous tragedy occurs and how you would deal with an post-apocalyptic world?

    For example:

    - nuclear warheads being detonated accidentally (maybe involving the use of spilt coffee)
    - some heat resistant asteroid slamming into half of the earth
    - synchronised earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis all over the earth

    You get the picture.

Anyway, I have started preparing things my family would need. I don't know how far to take this without being in danger of being branded a lunatic but here is what I have so far:

    1. Batteries
    2. Plastic sheeting
    3. Candles
    4. Wood
    5. String
    6. Swiss army pen knife
    7. Lots of first aid supplies.
    8. Bottled water
    9. Non perishable food like instant noodles and tinned stuff
    10. Tampons (for the Mrs)
    11. Pencil

Here is what I really want but don't know how to get:

    1. Penicillin. I think this would be absolutely vital. How do you have to get this without a prescription? I want a decent amount just in case.
    2. Gun
    3. Some form of sword or spear

    Genuine question about the penicillin.

Yes, I do consider it. I will be a Mad Max II, saving a lot of hot chicks from the bad guys.

You can survive without penicillin, I know, I'm allergic to it!

I think you should also stock up on things that you could use for barter purposes

I think I would rather be one of the bad guys that you fail to save the hot chicks from.

To LC, no I don't think about it. I have candles and plenty of tinned food but then without clean water they are not much good. Given the size of HK flats you couldn't store enough water to survive very long. Given my luck I would have tons of penicillin and then contract a resistant bug.

Now that's taking thoughtful future-mindedness to the extreme

Dunno... Maybe add to the list, just in case, nappies (diapers) for the new babe?

Plus, a torch or two (since you've already batteries).

If you're serious, check out SurvivalBlog.com

There are people out there who have spent years and years preparing for [insert man-made or natural disaster here]. As far as I know, the strategy usually revolves around having supplies for the initial 'get out of Dodge' situation and making one's way to a prepared shelter with large stockpiles of essential items.

Here, there's not much chance of having enough supplies in your home to last more than a few weeks. I doubt there's enough space in the average HK home to even store clean water for longer than that. Not to mention food, medical supplies etc.

What's the pencil used for without paper? Write on the walls?

Edit: Don't for get the sharpener or you could use the knife too.

Just call in HC's kids, they are prepared for anything (Just joking HC)

To LC, if you are the only person left alive make sure you have plenty of tissues.
