Any ideas for short term stopping a roof leaking until we can get the money together to pay someone to do it properly?
Was thinking along idea of tarpaulin/ plastic sheeting but not sure how practical that is.

remove existing plaster within the area of the leak, dry the wet area possibly with a blow drier, plug the hole(s) with the stuff that is used for sealing the windows into the frame, use the blow drier to make dry again, Use plaster to cover the leaky area as it is so humid these days use a blow drier again to help dry the plaster. In the room with the place a humidfieir (maybe to two) and a high power fan to keep the room dry.
DISCLAIMER: This is based on the fact that I have not even looked at the leak location so no guarantee that it will work as not certain how much damage exist to the structire and the size of the leak.

Would this still apply for a house made from wood?
I haven't seen the leak either just trying to troubleshoot from afar...
ummm not certain - as it could or couldn't - I suppose you don't know till you try.
There is also just doing yourself spot roof repair as well - replacing part of the roof that is damaged instead of the entire thing.
Since the house is wood and not plaster, what is the roof compsed of? And is it flat?
Will try to find apicture.
Basic description is - a traditional Thai-style house predominantly made from wood with the classic thai-style inverted V-shaped roof.
Haven't seen the place for several years so can't remember how the roof is joined on the inside...
Be hard to plug that leak from the inside as the water will just go elsewhere.
What materal is the roof made of?
