    Crime map? Is there one?

I was poking around a bit briefly on the government's website and found some crime statistics, but I was wondering do they release a public 'map' of where crimes are taking place like they do in the UK and the US? Something that overlays on Google or something like that?

I was actually wondering about Chai Wan, how safe/unsafe vs. say other parts of HK Island.

Wow they only seized 8kg of marijuana this year, compared to 157 kg of ketamine? fuck sake!

It's always reassuring to see those numbers. Even if they are low or not all crimes are reported, it still compares favorably to my hometown of Washington DC (population 600,000). DC is nearly double or triple in every category.

I lived in Chai Wan for 4 years before my move to Clear Water Bay, never had a problem, it was quite rare to see foreigners around there but still once in a while I would see some, more foreigners around Island Resort in Siu Sai Wan.

Sounds like the cops have their priorities straight here then, a bit of weed ain't hurting anyone here. Can't say the same for the zombified young girls being helped out of clubs by wanker bankers with shit-eating grins on their faces.

Besides the figures being remarkably low for such a large population, the interesting thing is that the big changes between 2010 and 2011 are in drug seizures (everything else is around flat, with the exception of homicides which are so low in absolute terms that they'd be statistically insignificant).

Heroin seizures doubled, meth tripled, ketamine doubled, coke and ecstasy fell dramatically. I wonder if these reflect drug use trends in the population or if it's just randomness in a couple of big seizures.

That's the thing, is it because they are turning a blind eye to the illegal but harmless substance, or are the kids here really not that into it

Haha, maybe the dealers here are not trendy enough for the kids here, the smokers here definitely aren't.

It seems most of ketamine users are teenagers, who doesn't have the concept of consequence, which partly why they get caught much more often. Unlike weed user here in HK, most tends to be more mature and more subtle in the terms of usage.

But nevertheless, HK is after all a tiny city with tons of things going on, I'd expect as long as you don't over do or disturb others, you should get away fairly easy.

When my wife and I returned to the UK 5 years ago we moved to a little village called Holmer Green which was known to be very safe. We were burgled immediately and it turned out that the village was experiencing a bit of a crime wave, cars broken into, burglaries and so on....we set up a neighbourhood watch group on our close and at one of our meetings with the police liaison officer he told us that an unwanted side effect of crime maps is that criminals use them to target 'virgin' crime areas!!
dear giant and kogia like this.
