Well I can give you a hint OP, this has been the coldest Lunar new year in 16 years, but not the coldest winter overall.
Thought the press was saying last year was the coldest winter in 30+ years.
It appears 1892/93 was the coldest, a bit before my time I'm afraid.

F*** being the COLDEST winter. It's been cold enough thank you. In my "built for tropical climates" village house we have used the freezer as a heater it's been so F***ing cold. Thursday is predicted to be twice the temp of the holidays - yippee - winter is over with only a mild case of influenza.
Relish the cold - the summer furnace is only a few months away...
bring me 35C - 80% Humidity any day over this cold.
Ah yes, this reminds me. I know a few new colleagues to HK who are always shocked at how cold HK winters can be, despite us being technically just within the tropics. They think 7 or 8 degrees and it's no big deal like home, little do they realize that 7 or 8 degrees in HK is so different, muhahaha.
So why is it that HK has this border-line temperate climate that is colder than other places on the same latitude? The answer, we have the "Siberian High" in winter:
Siberian High - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
But fear not, this Siberian high effect on Hong Kong is not continuous like it is further north on the mainland. Once it retreats, warm air will return. Which is why for HK's winter, you can find yourself wearing t-shirts on one week and heavy jackets the very next week.
