if you don't like the staring in HK I recommend you stay well clear of the Mainland and anywhere frequented by large numbers of them (Mainlanders I mean) - Ocean Park, Disney etc.

Wait till you have Eurasian kids (sorry, am I being presumptious?), then it will be them getting all the stares. Even more so if they are good looking.

I actually find I get treated nicer and with a lot more friendliness when I'm with local women than when I'm with European/Hispanic women, although cab drivers have acted kinda odd on occasion. Once, after dropping off a local girl I was seeing, me and a cabbie vibed to Pink Floyd's "The Wall." He had a pretty good system in the cab.

The KCR is a great place to get stared at. China's definitely a LOT worse though. I actually don't mind it that much, but then again, I'm a big guy and I can handle myself One good thing about HK is that people just stare. There aren't any physical threats of violence like you might come across in New York. While I love NYC, it's nice to not have to deal with the BS anymore.

I agree... being stared at is nothing compared to the verbal and even borderline physical harrassment you may experience in nyc. also cabbies in nyc don't stare, they barely even pay attn to your existence since they're too busy yapping away on their cell...LOUDLY.

there were a few times in the nyc subway where we got so pissed at the attitudes of someone...wish we had a gun...now THAT'S f$@ked up...

You know, I said it was kinda nice to be away from the BS, but I kinda miss it too. Life in HK is dull in comparison. I actually had great convos with cabbies in NYC and out on Long Island. I have convos with cabbies here too, but the language barrier kinda limits the kinds of discussions you can have. Nothing like discussing healthcare/SKS rifles/education/inventions(!) with a crazy old guy in a beat up Ford or Chevy. What I *don't* miss is tipping.

Oh yeah, having cute girls approach you is always fun too. Doesn't happen as much here, but some of the local girls can be surprisingly forward.

Interesting that someone mentioned Sha Tin and Mongkok! Never really noticed being stared at that much in either of these places with or without my wife. In fact I've found HK to accept mixed marriage more so that many western countries. What I do find though is that we now have a baby daughter and everyone wants to see what she looks like. Great opener for conversation!

And agreed with what was said above about China, you have no idea what being stared at is until you are here........especially when you are stuck out further away from civilization! (I'll be glad to get back to HK tonight!)
