How can I change my surname to my new husband's?

    Hi all!

I just got married about 2 months ago, and I wanted to change my last name to my husband's. Can anyone tell me how to go about doing that and about how long it takes?

    Thanks muchly in advance!!

First step would be have it switched on your passport. Call your country's local embassy / consulate.

Thanks. How long would you say this process takes, though?

you just submit the marriage cert....when i did it for my UK passport it took a couple of weeks, i think. about the same with the canadian passport.

don't forget to also change your id card

I think it is safe to say that is based on your country and how easy it is to change your name/get new passport issued with that name.

My advice is to change your passport first, followed by HKID. Take your marriage certificate and your passport to immigration and it costs less for a new HKID (I have no idea why).

Then go to the bank with these things too. Most other things like utility companies need just a copy of you marriage cert.

I've been married over a year and still haven't changed everything over...it's a real mission!
