I would be far less forgiving if she was crazy enough to then take out a loan herself to cover someone else's loan. If she was suddenly legally tied into a debt that was unserviceable, I would probably decide that she was unemployable.

Edit: My helper has been on a course from these guys. She didn't really need it so much as she has her finances in order. But she did say that a very useful thing that came out of it was some guidance on how to avoid being sucked into other peoples' (relatives, friends) money problems.
the loan sharks are scum bags. they will call at all times asking to speak to your helper and if you cover for her - they will hurl abuse at you, your wife and even your children. worse will be if they do a site visit when you are not at home or even if they follow your helper home while she is with your kids... this is a nightmare scenario but these guys are assholes and as they collect a % of the debt - they have the incentive.

I don't agree with a loan to cover another loan but financial assistance is something I have provided my helpers and advise them to let me know. As long as the amt is reasonable - I help, I don't charge any interest and I simply deduct a proportion from their salary as agreed.

I have dealt with loan sharks twice - once from my helper whom I did help as above. Never again as these guys are so fucking uneducated and illiterate. The other time is dealing with my helper who co-signed her friends loan. I personally went to the loan agency for the latter and got my helper's friend employer details and explained to the employer this and the danger her helper was putting her kids in. Her kids were even younger than mine and being that the husband and wife worked - the next day the loan was sorted and I got that confirmed by the loan shark and the loan company.
I never want to speak, hear or confront these assholes again.

Has anyone ever seen evidence of debt collectors going further than intimidation and harassment? Where does the law stand on how these guys operate?

I would go to the police and tell them you're being harassed. You're not a guarantor and they accept that but they've asked you to borrow money to cover the loan? They know they can't contact your sister at your employer's house but they've threatened to call there. Tell the police and make them pursue it!!

I would recommend talking to the HDH people at St John's Cathedral. They have legal people who work pro bono and can help you in discussions with the police etc.
