So many directions you can take this topic

Just remember who owns the entire HK entertainment industry, before you get into the whole entertainer role model debate.
If this was my Masters degree and I could write 60,000 word thesis and draw it out of this issue, it could be taken in so many directions. The Edison Chen scandal and social morality, The Edison Chen scandal and Privacy on-line, The Edison Chen scandal and corruption in the Hong Kong Entertainment Industry. I guess it would depend on which direction aided the subject I was studying, quite a lot in this one.

Here is a quote from the Australian ninemsn news page, dated from yesterday, the 21st of February 2008. "The scandal has spread across the region, with police in Taiwan and China arresting around a dozen people this week for allegedly possessing and distributing the explicit photos." This topic is not merely local, it is quite international, the fact there are several news articles in Australia on this scandal says something of the immensity of it.

it still sounds a bit far-fetched to me - IF there was some kind of contract out would everyone know about it? Even dumb crooks aren't that dumb.

I feel really irritated about cases such as this. The ones who are wrong here are the ones who look at the pictures, the media who report on this instead of on truly useful information which is sorely needed, and especially the envious losers who post the stuff, (I on the other hand am a non-envious loser).

Oh poor innocent public who can't control themselves from looking at whatever passes in front of their innocent eyes. Where are they going to find role models now. I mean, if you can't model your life on a 20-something year old movie star, what can you believe in?!

At some point, we have to grow up and decide to turn off the TV. Not let the media dictate what we think and see.

hmmm...a 20-something year old guy who finds himself with great fame and fortune decides to have sex with some women.

Wow, that's baffling. If I didn't see those pictures, I think I wouldn't believe that was possible. Very, very disappointing.

What I'm wondering is how such massive police resources are assigned to protect him just because he happens to be a celebrity. If the average person was threatened, I doubt they'd do anything other than say "Call us when you have an actual crime to report." But of course, the rich and famous get preferential treatment. Can't have those precious celebrities harmed, can they?

You're right, dumb crooks go to jail, smart ones put enough fear into the community that nobody will go up against them in a court of law.

Triads have been doing their thing since the 1700's, and even went up against the communists of Mainland China, providing funds to obtain weapons to fight them off. Shanghai in the later part of the 1930's was a good example.

As I said previously, even something bad has something good about it, socially it seems to work, violent crime out in public is at one of the lowest rates globally. The Triads work within the slack the HK Police force give, and its widely known that xpats/tourists are off limits.

Like the old Chinese proverb, " One must never kill the cow that provides much milk".

I love urban myths... and wouldn't Edison just WISH that, after fun messing with that compliant niece-girl related to one of THE triads, this was one, now.

The grubby Chinese media are getting loads of mileage out of this STOOpid man-boy and his mindless little accident, just as tabloids elsewhere would with such a similar silly incident involving photogenic celebs.

Dean... While this case in HK "China" has, of course, been mentioned in international reports (2-3 weeks after the "scandal" here), guess that not all that many in the West give it much SERIOUS thought. But yeah, many weird, interesting angles of analysis could be speculated here, if one was so inspired to write a critical paper or dissertation.

Unaware or not, most of us like to interpret things in the light of our (hidden) prejudices and motives, so taking the moral "let this be a lesson to [us] all" line is understandable too.

Still, maybe also try to see things from a more secular perspective AND NOT ponder too sadly 'bout today's sooo many "lost souls"

isn't porn intended to be viewed by others? so if a married couple take a nude photo or 2 is it porn? I don't think so.

One of my favorite English words is the word 'presupposition'. Each person has their own set of presuppositions which is going to come out in their comments and ideologies. The most commonly supported presupposition I feel today is that all things are okay, and who are we to say something is inferior that someone likes or dislikes. This is often helpful, good for cross cultural activities, good for a husband and wife situation.

However, if one is to enter into a discussion on moral ethics in this post-modern air we breath, it is shut down - no-one talks morals or ethics unless someone is being discriminated against or oppressed (which is fine, good and helpful).

I think the images are pornographic, yet it is a very different kind. If I took private images of my wife for her and myself alone, this is quite another thing then if it was our intention to distribute them.

End of note: this is a complicated issue, very complicated and I don't think it can be simplified.

I disagree. it is a fairly simple issue.

    1. E. Chen took pictures of him and his gfs (allowed and totally OK, the morality is another story since everybody has different standard so no need to even discuss it...

    2. E.Chen brought is computer for repair

    3. Dumbass repair guy found the pictures and started to broadcast them everywhere (this guy is responsible, not E.Chen, not the girls, not the ppl who are now sending pictures to friends...he simply stole a private property and should be prosecuted for it)

That the pictures are not of the taste of everyone that is not the problem (they did not do those picture to please you or me, but to please themselves..)

There is actually no story here, except dumbass repair guy who thought it would be smart to download/broadcast/distribute, you name it...
