Cant open it. What are they thinking of raising it to?
and they will get their way primarily because the transport functional constituency is dominated by taxi driver and CY Leung needs every vote from this constituency to stay in power
Asking for an increase of $2 on the flag-fall fare, and 10c for every extra 200 metres. This is urban taxis.
It would be neat if they would make the higher fare conditional on having working crank handles for all windows in the taxi and on the taxi not being malodorous.
I've heard a figure about that before (maybe it was ~500), but I have some doubts about whether it's true, or whether the Taxi Association is fudging.
$300 for a 12 hour shift is $25 an hour, below the minimum wage. If drivers really were making this little, then a less physically demanding job like a building doorman would be preferable to spending twelve hours being harassed by passengers. And I occasionally come across restaurants that are frequented by groups of fairly happy taxi drivers who do not appear to be stressed out chasing down every dollar of potential fare.
So while I am sure they are not raking in large chunks of money and that it's a tough job, I suspect that the $300 figure is a piece of self-serving misinformation.
Edit: if drivers really were only making $25 and hour, they would be taking cost saving steps like not idling their engines whilst sleeping parked on the side of the road, not having their AC running in the middle of winter, and not flooring the accelerator between traffic lights. I'm pretty sure they have to cover their own fuel costs.

I write it off as the same mental quirk that causes people to rush to disembark from ferries, and then walk like snails once they get off.Original Post Deleted
Compared to my home town and the likes of London it is still a pittance to pay so i'm not too concerned.
