Brilliant. The false 'fact' got 11 pages of banter... the revelation of the truth, however, killed it dead!

Well, it was revealed a few pages earlier...but even with the inverted result, at 29% intolerance, Hong Kong is still in the top group of intolerant countries. Places like New Zealand, UK etc have less the 5%. So the truth is the same, just the degree is reduced from incredible to believable.

One point I wonder: For locals looking for a place a "many-foreigners-are-living-there" has a positive or a negative impact? I feel it's rather a positive selling point.

Since I moved flat a few times in HK I also never noticed that anybody local next door was moving out because I moved in. Also never had "you-know-where-the-airport-is" sticker on my door.

I don't know how the original question was phrased, but I was wondering what the chinese translation of 'foreigner' means. I suspect when people advertise 'dinner with foreigner' and 'marry a foreigner' they mean 'white guy'.

Regardless, the unison survey and the hkgov's 2009 survey demonstrate most hkers are not at all tolerant to certain races. Which is born out in numerous everyday examples.

Perhaps they should just rephrase the question. "How would you feel if you lived next to South Asians or blacks

Should be pretty interesting.Perhaps 80% will be intolerant and one person will go off at a rant about them being triads.

    Lol.

That's exactly what the unison survey did. And that's pretty much the response they got.

    The question was:
"For people with these background, which do you find unacceptable to be your neighbour? [show card]"
    a – with criminal record
    b – different race
    c – heavy drinker
    d – emotionally unstable

    etc…

    Answer: (1) acceptable (2) unacceptable

You can find the original questions (in Chinese) here, where the translation above is taken from, too: Hong Kong NOT World’s Most Racist State After All
