It's easy to have a clean driving record when you don't drive.
That's exactly right. The record is far cleaner than in other countries.

When's the last time you saw colored people made to sit in the back of the bus? I'll tell you something, in 1975 even after the Civil Rights Act some 5 years prior. You did not have to live it, so you have no idea. Does the HK bus driver make you or I sit at the back of the bus? Are you made to use a different toilet and drinking fountain?

They have their little identity and will fight tooth and nail (or rather bitch down to races) to keep it.

It's not just races HK people deem as a lower class, when the white man's back is turned, there's contempt from the locals.

    It's like a passive-aggressive thing they do.

And how is this different than like 90% of the countries out there that don't really like imperialists or colonist not only taking over land and rights, but telling them decades after that they must adore (in your words) the "white man"?

My friend... you mistaken respect for racism. You don't deserve respect; that is earned. Don't equate lack of respect with racism.

Kids? Are you "kidding" me? What will kids say? High school juvenile antics and local kids... I know of none that are that disrespectful that are properly brought up in good families. In every society, you will have street kids that act tough and have lower standards. Don't paint every HK citizen that way by using a blanket statement that "most" local kids think that way.

    So that is a start.

And is this different than any other country, even the supposedly most tolerant... US and UK? Been there and done that, and I wouldn't say HK is better or worse when it comes to distrust or prejudice about foreigners.

Whereas... they will show open hostility in both words and expressions to Blacks or browns and to show who is really boss. The same applies with attitudes to Mainlanders. They would stand on the Grand podium and lecture them on social values. But the social values and attitudes of Africans and Indians are actually higher than Hong Kongers in some cases.

At the end of the day it has nothing to do with being defensive about their own identities. They simply view their identities, values and outlook being on par with the West but get frustrated because simply they are not accepted. They then have to take it out on someone.

In one of the forum posts, some younger Chinese wants independence to be part of the UK and US. Now that isn't really trying to form one's own identity but rather ape what they perceive to be their betters of superior standing. Would they fight tooth and nail if for any reason they were in the arms of the USA, Australia, UK or Canada? But what happens if that country is the Philippines (a democratic country), Japan (democratic country), Malaysia (a democracy) or the largest democracy in the world India?... but the answer is obvious.
Yes, life and society are messy. I agree with that.

And there's baggage from being a colony.

A big problem I have with us expats, is that we are equally insensitive to the extent of not even considering why or how the local HK citizens have shaped their identities and way of thinking. Point the race finger first, ask questions later... that type of style never works for a peaceful society.

I have no problem with what you are saying above, the problem I have is to take this too far and ignore all the problems in HK or whitewash them with "well it is their choice" or "it's their culture so don't criticize". Hong Kong is not perfect, nowhere is perfect. Criticism is valid. I stand by my earlier statement that a large percentage of HK people are racist (or prejudiced, or bigoted, or whatever you want to call it to avoid using the correct word). Does that mean I think they are bad people? No. Does that mean HK is a bad place? No. I mean we can't even discuss the crap driving of taxi drivers now without being labelled as insensitive expats!

Uh, what's the problem suddenly - previously you defended these things as not being 'true racism' and just a matter of preference instead.

And just as I am reading this on the bus, racism rears it's ugly head. I can hear a couple beside me berating a Philipina that she should give her seat up to someone. Luckily she doesn't understand Cantonese too well and is staying put.
The conversation is still going on between the couple who appear to be late 50's and they are using derogatory terms to describe her and that she doesn't understand her place.
I will intervene if they get at her again. Wtf.. just like aparteid.

Yes, this is pure racism. Shouldn't be tolerated. Just hate it as it shames us sll.
