Someone on another thread had these numbers. They were asked where they got them from, no answer as yet. I base mine on the comments from this thread - after 6 years I have read a lot of thread, not yet seen one where a white dependent visa (to use a recent example) took 20 weeks, but there are a few on here who are not-white talking about this.

I think I just read the post you are referring to. Which leads me to another question:

    Is racial profiling racist?

Fascinating question. I tend to think that the answer is NO - but that it really depends on how the racial profiling is carried out. LIke I said, if you are profiling for "poor people" (immigration) then please include poor white people (they don't).

Racial profiling in HK. For some flights and airlines (Sri Lankan, Ethiopian Airlines) you have officials from HKIMM or is it the HK police checking passengers’ passports as soon as they get off the aero bridge and enter the terminal.
Is this really necessary? I mean eventually one is going to head towards the Immigration Counter or transfer desks if in transit.

Yes it is, because citizens of several countries (including Ethiopia and Sri Lanka) need visas even just to transit Hong Kong Airport, and the way the airport is set up you don't encounter an Immigration facility in transit in general, so it needs to be done at the door of the plane.

    GF,

With all due respect, that not the case. The officals randomly checking passports or visa's that they suspect are fake. The checking of the appropriate visa is done at origin at Check in.

Airlines check visas as a revenue protection measure - if the passenger doesn't have something that looks reasonably like an appropriate visa then they have to bring them back at their own expense. The airlines aren't the destination (or transit) countries' immigration service and they have no mechanism for checking the validity of a visa!

Yeahbaby you are missing the point.

Yes there are different degrees of racism. It is great that Hong Kong does not suffer from the mindless violent racism seen in some countries. This does not however mean there is not racism in Hong Kong. No one is saying, as far as I can read, that all HKers are racist. You seem to be wanting a different word to describe the different levels of racism, sorry look up the definition of racism it is quite broad. Again you come up with "you have never suffered true racism". Yes I have and so have my family.

As I said on another thread this does not make HKers bad people or HK a bad place. But by ignoring the reality you are doing nothing to challenge it and in fact are condoning it.

I don't disagree with you that there are racial tensions. And I do feel bad for you if you have been discriminated against.

And that's why there needs to be serious and thoughtful discourse on what level of tensions and biases exist.

But it has to be given proper perspective. Look at the title of the post and the title of the article. And look at all the agreement that HKers are "the most intolerant" in the world.

Again, you give only a black and white choice. A binary choice. Either you are challenging it or you are condoning it. And think for a moment, that raising what you feel is discrimination in HK to the level of a Racist, desensitizes the true Racist atrocities and destructive forces in this world.

I simply challenge the premise that is put forth. If it is only for some to back off from the extremism of labeling HK a black pit of Racism. Then there can be a real discussion about why and how to solve racial biases and prejudices.

Whatever racial tensions you feel are prevalent in HK must be taken into proper perspective. Many posters in this thread and forum can't even admit that just maybe... maybe, the most intolerant in the world is just a bit sensationalist and inaccurate.

I can honestly tell you that local ethnic Chinese feel its rather radical to call them the most intolerant in the world when it comes to other races. And to be actually called a racist, that is just mind-boggling to them. When truly, so much of the majority just want to live life without being bothered-- even if it means not being bothered by outsiders, foreigners or other races or ethnic groups. You may label that xenophobic. But the R word should be carefully chosen.

Do Sri Lankans and Ethiopians only arrive on planes from those countries then?
