There's a big difference between achieving a certain level of industrialization and "taking the reins" as you like to put it which would mean supplanting China.

SA has been invited to join the BRIC(now BRICS) however one of the argument against was the relatively small size of its economy compared to the other members. To keep your analogy, they're traveling in the buggy but far from taking any reins. There's no way in my opinion that we will see any african country become a major economic player like China this century.

Integration is not going to happen overnight. I think we'll see South Africa become a major powerhouse before the majority of HKers' attitudes change.

    BTW, I'm a HK-born South Asian.
Crime issues you refer to are more class based than racial. Crime rate with the comparatively poor and uneducated is higher in every country in the world, it doesn't matter what the race is.

Gilles, if you'd read my post, you'd see that I said exactly the same thing you did.

As for SA and Africa supplanting China...time will tell! Producing in China definitely isn't getting any cheaper.

Yes, we have had some pretty much high profile murders by some pretty high profile rich people. Should we then tar all rich people with the same brush... no! then why do we need to do this with S. Asians?

HK appears to be becoming a hub for methamphetamine. I wonder how much locals would like to get pulled aside by Aussie Customs and given the rubber glove because they're from HK.

    Let's see...

Most cat burglars here are locals
Most drug dealers in HK are locals
Most murderers in HK are locals
Most triads in HK are locals

Looks like locals are the problem! Oh noez! Let's video them drinking Blue Girl at a dai pai dong and report on the local crime wave.

Gary, please show the statistics for this - not newspaper reports, not youtube videos, but actual statistics from courts or police or government.

It seems a big part of the issue is the Chinese triads are recruiting South Asians (not Southeast Asians, gary, when's the last time you saw a Filipino or Indonesian triad?). I read an article a few years ago where the triads said South Asian gang members tended to be more loyal. It seems the triads are the real issue that needs tackling. Good luck with that, they're very much part of Cantonese society.

They may not be members, but the Filipinos trafficking young girls in to work in the brothels of Wanchai are certainly in close cahoots with the triads (who provide "security" and buy off the police, as I understand it).

Fair enough, and I do know they have their own gangs. If you really want to get into organized crime here, you can't get too far without triad involvement it seems.
