I don't think where the ship was would not have been a T8 as it would have been close to the centre of the cyclone.

LMAO. Reading only one half of the argument with Watercooler is hilarious. Why do you guys bother? Just put him on ignore like I have and save yourselves all a lot of angst - he's just NOT worth it.
Back on the subject of the typhoon, so far we've had opinions from HK Island, Kowloon and some parts of the NT (which taken together would seem to be an averagely decent sample size) and most have said it's one of the weakest T8's they have experienced. Which is not really surprising since it was only a Category 2 hurricane when it was approaching HK and several hundred km away. I wonder if that one they called too late last year has made them overly cautious?
The problem with excessive caution is that you are going to get folks (some already on these boards) who are going to say "oh it's nothing" and ignore the signal the next time, which would be dangerous. The weather is notoriously hard to predict and those guys at the HKO are probably damned if they do and damned if they don't, but I don't think today was one of their better efforts.
Sure, why don't we let you run the HKO instead, I'm sure you will make a hell of a job. It's hilarious, you don't even know what I'm saying and you can make judgments based on that?
Reading some of your older posts, it looks like someone else put you on their ignore list...getting a taste of your own medicine are we?

Isn't a t8 (or any signal) automatically issued once wind speeds reach a certain, um, speed? How much discretion do hko have in these decisions?
If you are referring to me and the freshwater thread, yes, I did say I will put Moving on my ignore list, but I've decided to grant her a repreive. I'll monitor her and see if she acts better when I have posts with her next time. I agree her comments on lamest T8 based on her experience on the boat is rather daft to say the least, but even so, your comments seems a tad harsh. Even if her comment is pretty stupid (and it is), I would agree with Howard that your wise crack does present you in a less-than-positive light. Maybe just tone down your comments a little and things will work alot better (Just a friendly advice ok?).
As for whether the HKO should have hoisted a T8, well, it's easy to say as armchair commentators with hindsight that this T8 may seem weak in certain places, but then, none of us are in the HKO's position. We do not know (beyond the wind speed threshold) what calcuations the HKO goes on in hoisting a T8. We do not know the kind of consequences the HKO would face for botching a forecast (as in underestimating a storm's strength). I will go out on a limb to defend the HKO here. I know, not a popular move, but I think we should'nt be so quick to condemn the HKO. They are trying to do the best they can to protect Hong Kong, not whether we can get a day off, after all.
The material on the scaffolding on the construction site nearby is badly shredded. There is no way there should have been workers up there this morning. If a T8 protects people in vulnerable jobs like that then I agree HKO made the right call today.
Well if that report is correct, the wind was 90km/h when the ship sank, so it should still fall under a T8 technically (if the wind is sustained-if it was increasing, it would be T9). The difference of course is that the incident occurred out on the sea with no protection from the wind, so the sea just came at the ship without mercy.
Well all I can say is that you are more forgiving than I am, tolerating idiocy like that. But oh well, that's your call.
As for the HKO, I would agree, except I can't shake the feeling that sometimes the HKO seem to be swayed by political motives (as in making sure the T8 occurs at night). Yeah I know, most likely just sheer coincidence over the way many of these storms over the moved over the last few years, but still, one does wonder sometimes...![]()
(This T8 of course is an exception to the recent pattern).

This typhoon was one of the best we've ever had! Minimal damage, timed perfectly for maximum time off work. I hope we get a LOT more like this in the future! I am over the moon!!
