I think pot, kettle, black there.

It is a reasonable point of discussion. I have been up since just before 6 and seen not a breath of wind, and a few rain showers. Yes I know it might be different elsewhere, but I doubt it will be serious enough to stop people safely getting about.

Husband raised the issue of possibility of trees etc on roads needing to be cleared before people get out and about. But maintaining a T8 signal for that erodes the effectiveness of the system, there should be a T3 with warning to take care or something.

EDT: And T3 is now up

HK Observatory agree with you, they have just lowered to a T3.

    Where do u live?

On my way to work i have seen scaffholding shattered..trees in the middle of the road etc etc....peeps need time to clean up etc etc...T3 wil b there soon and hk will run as usual. Yes probably u could have bring T3 2 hs earlier....and then what? Total chaos because the rest ia not ready?

It ia not a valid point of discussion....at every T8 we get wanna be weather expert tellig us that it is fine and that where they come from this is just a breeze...of course where they come from the population density is a 100th of that of HK wo much islands (plenty of peeps commute by boat to work here)… etc etc....

By the way 13 dead due to the typhoon juat next to HK.

But i guess it is nothing indeed...my sis just told me that there has been 20 shootings in chicago over the weekend so...

We had a lucky escape, 3 people killed elsewhere on south China coast. HK got off lightly - about a dozen people treated at hospital according to BBC News. We weren't hit this time, but the system exists so that if we are, we're prepared and it would not be a disaster as you see with weaker storms in less developed and prepared parts of the world.

By the way, we don't live in Guangdong, we live in Hong Kong, where one woman suffered mild injuries due to a sign falling. Nor do we live in Chicago, in case it escaped your attention.

Thank you very much for all those details. HK is indeed very far from Guangdong.

This is spot on in my view. Typhoons don't pose such a big threat to HK as they do to other parts of China or the Phils because of the remedial works that have been done over the decades (concrete slopes etc), building standards (holes in large, flat faced buildings) and the protocols around typhoons - HK Observatory guidance, buildings that seal doors, sandbag stuff etc.
