All that can be said has been said. General consensus can be summed up as: 'You should have interviewed properly, and you're a tight git for trying to get away with paying less than a month's notice'.

So back to bashing the Brits...

Thats all fine - but when you say FRENCH TOAST & your helper replies FRENCH FRIES (???????) - and I told her dont worry - when you go there ans say FRENCH TOAST they know what you want.

Sorry, you didnt get the point: It is NOT about getting away with payment for one month notice, that would be even not worth to typing this post here. The probation period would mainly help the helper to take a little bit more efforts in doing the job good & not with every thing they are doing wrong & we tell them that this was wrong (this is my right I guess) not just simply reply:
    Okay then you terminate me.......maaaaaam

According to the new findings for the Hong Kong poverty all FDH in Hong Kong are well above that, so why do we always have to pity them so much & feeling being the BAD EXPLOITER ? If you treat your helper well - no need to have any bad feelings !
1.3 Million people in HKG are below that poverty line: Hong Kong be ashamed & at very first HKG Government feel ashamed

Still not quite sure how probation is going to help, even during probation there is still a notice period is there not?

FDH has 3 month probation, can be fired with notice.
FDH does not have probation, can be fired with notice.

    Or am I missing something?

You are right - but stipulating a probation period will have some psychological effect on this ladies - to try a "little bit harder" & not everything is done with "Soooory Siiiiir or Sorrrrry Maaaaam" & next one is "then you terminate me".

Many replies here simply show a very serious NON-EXPERIENCE with the real helpers behavior & with the change from old generation helpers to new generation helpers.........
