Shit just got serious in the 'ppines.
wow. hurricanes are nasty. i went for a few summers down to Mississippi after Katrina to help out a bit chaperoning with others a bunch of kids from church, it was awful. your post INXS reminded me of this pic...
In Manila now and I know people in both Samar and Leyte. The way of life in the Visayas is pretty simple and the construction is pretty basic. My heart goes out to them because this storm is definitely going to cause massive destruction...
I'm sure there will be more clips soon. Over on the weather underground hong kong site, there is a fella named "typhoon hunter" who specializes in capturing typhoon footage. He will probably give us some Haiyan footage soon enough.
P.S-Updates on Haiyan can be found on this site:

Hmm... er...
Crisis Map
Thanks, good comparison there.
Katrina was a Cat 5 storm while out in the Gulf of Mexico, but weaken to a Cat 3 when it hit land. Haiyan however was still near peak intensity as a Cat 5 storm when it hit the Philippines. The particular sea bed topography (rising steeply to land or a more shallow gradient) will determine the destruction of the storm surge. If the sea bed has a gentle gradient, then the sea will pile in deeper inland, causing more destruction. If the sea bed has a steep gradient before reaching the coast, the surge won't reach as deep inland but the waves will be higher.

I know the General Manager of the electricity co-operative in IloIlo - nice guy - met his wife and family in their little house in the city. Hope all are well.
