Good job Hong Kong!!! That's the mature thing to do, slap economic sanctions onto a country that got smoked by the one of the largest typhoons in history.... over something as trivial as a botched rescue attempt.

Pretty sad, especially considering how vital of a role the Filipinos play in Hong Kong's economy.
It is a further indictment of the utter incompetence of the morons running the show. Even though I have no part in electing him, he makes me feel ashamed to be associated with Hong Kong. Bring back Donald, he had plenty of flaws but CY Leung makes him look good - a scarcely unimaginable feat.

Unfortunately I have to agree with a previous comment by TheBrit:-

"Beijing knew exactly how this would be perceived. They went ahead and did it anyway. "

clearly demonstrating that they really don't give a shite what anyone thinks of them.
    Exactly right!

"In face of disaster, let Hong Kong's kindness prevail"

Will be interesting to see how much "kindness" our top tycoons will be dishing out.

Li Ka-shing, net worth around $30 billion
Lee Shau Kee, around $20 billion
    Kwoks, $19 billion

anyone heard anything about them yet?

It should, but I think they are pre-occupied with other matters and in reality, even before the storm I don't think they really cared (and rightly so).

A concise and well thought out statement with which I totally agree!

China hasn't asked The Philippines to beg...how do you get 'beg' from that?

It's really amazing to me how people can't comprehend this. Of course, with it being China, we don't have to use reason do we? If they're not refusing to help typhoon victims they're shitting on our trains right?
Rubbish. Firstly I've been on the thread the whole time. Secondly, this issue is above petty human politics. If Chinese and HK leaders do not realise that, they EVEN more stupid than I gave them credit for.

I know, but it would be great if next time their gov was doing a press conference they could just add a 'by the way....' at the end.

    From China:

“We express deep sympathy with the Philippines for their huge property losses and casualties and we have extended sincere solicitude,” the foreign ministry said on Tuesday. “We are willing to consider providing more humanitarian support and assistance to the Philippines within our capacity.”

The Philippines can ask for more help and it will be considered.

As a major player in the region, throwing cash at the problem isn't a sustainable solution is it?

if the Philippines rejected the donation - that would be politics at its worst and the Philippine President would appear to be ungrateful, irresponsible and selfish.

The Philippines have enough to deal with right now than going begging to the Chinese only. Surely China can't be so arrogant to only give when requested.
    This is a natural disaster.

Politics aside, economics aside, disputes aside - Give what you want, but give with a heart.

OK there's been a lot said here and apparently HKIT and INXS feel China was right to act as it did.

Could (whitout any name calling etc etc) these two gentlemen, lay down in one single post the reason as to why this donation form china is sufficient and should be perceived positively.

I know you have tried to give reasons here and there but to be frank it is all lost in the name calling, the references to chinese shitting on train (what has that got to do with the rest??) etcetc.

INXS, HKIT - the floor is yours:

ONE single post, well thought out and written, as to why this donation is sufficent and should be perceived positively.
