A few days in HK so far and I hate it. Tell me I'm being ridiculous.

no matter where you go the pain is the same just the components are different. Repeat this mantra many times until realization sinks in.

No tax declaration req., no dividend nor capital gains tax,
no social security deductions, 6k cold cash in my paw, no health insurance needed.
As others have mentioned, use HK as a platform.
I spend most of my time out of town

It took me a GOOD 18mths to get used to HK. Some people are a little quicker at settling in than others. It's a massive culture shock. I even went back home in November 2012 but was back again in November 2013 LOL. You will most likely get adjusted, but it is difficult. (Housing is cheaper in the New Territories by the way).

That is so true.I feel like a total stranger now in London on my rare visits back there.

Almost as shallow an existence as someone making blanket judgements after a few posts. :-P

No need to be unpleasant to the OP. They're having a tough time of it. A bit of support can mean a lot at times like this.

OP as you've discovered already, there are some real arseholes in HK. But there are some great people too! For some reason it's easier to meet the arseholes but hang on in there and you'll find the great guys too.

When I first came to HK I was thrilled to be here. I was thrilled by the energy and the crowds. I liked the tall new buildings and the ramshackle clutter of the old ones. I liked the countless restaurants and small shops. I liked never having to wait long for a bus, and being able to afford taxis. I loved the harbour and the ferries. I liked the way things could be repaired so easily. I liked the way buildings were demolished or constructed so quickly. I admired the people because they worked so hard, and the school and university students because they studied so hard. I loved Miss -. I was pleased and amused that all this was, in a way, British, and it was so easy for me to be here.

Now it is all familiar and the thrill is gone. Some of the good things even look like problems now.

Applejacks! I hope you go in the opposite direction.

Stop behaving like such an idiot. You seem to be taking the OP's view a little but too personally. Attitudes like yours are exactly the reason why the OP is finding their first days here tough. Have you never experienced culture shock? If you haven't, you've been lucky. No need to be unpleasant to someone who is experiencing it and seeking help from this forum. I don't endorse the OP's feelings but nor do I disregard them. You may view "supportive" as an insult but I don't. Fling all the insults you want at me as I don't give a monkey's what you think. But no need to pick on a struggling newbie. Have a bit of compassion. Karma's a bitch.

    Yes, the self-importance disease.

Stay here for a year and it may cure you from it.

You've only just arrived and hate it already? Oh boy, aren't you supposed to be in fantasy phase when you first arrive loving the place? hehe

Anywho, you just have to look at it for what it is, you win some you lose some, but look at the overall picture.

As far as housing, I've accepted the price as not bad because in return we don't have outrageous utility bills, cable/internet, mobile phone is cheaper, no car/insurance/fuel/etc., so really housing overall seemed ok compared to what you might pay in larger cities in the states.

As far as the LV bags, well I'm not an LV fan, but I've definitely learned to appreciate brands more, because I've noticed everytime I buy H&M, uniqclo, gap, or other cheaper stuff that it just breaks, so brand things *sometimes* last longer and have good quality. People here have more disposable income since they live with their families, so they spend it on food and brands.

Alcohol can help, haha, there are definitely times when I need a drink, but overall I drink MUCH less living in HK compared to the states, I think it's the humidity.

Do you have the choice to be in Hong Kong or is it required? I mean if you want to learn to be more open-minded, experience new things, then why not. But if you don't want to be here and justify it by money, doesn't make much sense. I'm sure people can make similar incomes in the states to here minus so I don't think money can overcome one who is miserable.

It helps to take long vacations and frequent trips back to the states, it helps you put things in place and realise that crap happens everywhere and not just here. But personally, it took me probably 2.5-3 years to adjust to HK. I've definitely had a lot of moments, but now it's easier to ignore stuff. Definitely I still realise whats going on and I don't like that, but it doesn't phase me and I just go on about my business. Yet, lately I'm still a tad frustrated with the hacking throat sounds in the MTR, lol.

Having hobbies can help too, go running, go exploring, go hiking, etc.

One friend once told me, to be in Hong Kong, you need a goal, and I really believe that. Without a goal, there is no point in being here, but with a goal, you have the best opportunity here at obtaining your goal.

Good luck and welcome to Hong Kong.
