Moving to HK- What not to bring

    Hi,

We are planning to move to HK in a few weeks and in the process of packing up our stuff. Moving our stuff is not an issue, since that would be paid for. We would be living in a rented apartment and just wondering what all to carry.

We have decided not to carry any furniture, (leaving behind the beds, sofa sets and tables and all), but would be carrying the electronic stuff like the computer, television sets, microwave, DVD etc.

Please advise on whether the rented apartments generally come fitted with white goods like Air Con, refrigerator, Dish washer, washing machine/ dryer?

Also wondering whether I should get my Mixer from here or buy a new food processor from HK itself? Anyone who may have recently bought one of a good beand may please advise.

    Thanks a ton!

Does wherever you are coming from have 220V electricity? This makes a big difference to what it is worth bringing. You should only bring TVS if they are 220V-capable and multi-standard. A 110V NTSC (North American) only TV is not a lot of use here.

Nearly all rented apartments come with aircons. Most come with fridges, many with a washing machine (although far fewer with a washer dryer or separate dryer), and very few with a dishwasher (many apartments simply don't have any space for one). But the more upmarket the apartment the more likely it is that you'll get all of them, so some indication of your rental budget would be helpful.

    Thanks PDLM.

We are moving from India and the electronic stuff is compatible to the HK requirements.

We would be looking for a 2BHK with a Budget of HKD 25000 (can be stretched to max. 30k)

Am especially confused on the Washing machine and the Refrigerator!

Like PDLM said, apartments often come with washing machines. Sometimes they come with fridges. A dryer is less common, and apartments at 25k are unlikely to have a dryer included. You won't find a dishwasher in a place at that budget.

If you already have good large appliances and do not have to pay for shipping, then you can bring over your existing appliances. But note that you may not find sufficient room for everything in the new place, especially if you have kids.

I've seen flats from 800 to 15,000 sq ft, depending on location and condition of building. So how much stuff you can fit in there will vary a lot.

Some washing machines here are also dryers, although they do not work very well. Many people just hang their clothes out to dry. So, more washing machines than dryers.
Also note that not many have ovens.
