    Wow! I can't believe how different they are. Almost like another language.

    This is an example of standard English compared with one of the many English dialects - although we still refer to them all as English. It appears to be even more different than your example!

    All the linguistic sources I can find show 800-1000 million native mandarin speakers but what do they know?

    I am happy to listen and learn but somehow when he tells me there are no native mandarin speakers I have doubts. Do you agree with him then?
