The stupid Bank of China ATM at Olympic has given me 1000 notes two times in the last two weeks. I don't like them, I avoid that particular ATM now.
Locals like calling them 金牛 (gam ngau), meaning "golden bull". The "golden" part came from the colour of the banknote. As for the "bull", $500HKD notes issued by HSBC used to have a bull printed on one side, thus locals call $500 those banknotes 大牛 (daai ngau), meaning "big bull". Slowly locals started to use 牛 (bull) to refer to $1000 notes too.
