We use a Doulton counter-top filter. You can find them at Wing On. We replace the filter roughly every 8-9 months.

No need to filter water for safety so if it's just taste you care about I guess you need to taste each brand.

I use a Philips on tap filter, available at Wing On.
    Why?
    - the water tastes better, give me a double blind taste test and I will be successful!
    - the filters do remove stuff, just look at them after a couple months' use

One of the main factors in deciding between the different brands, at least in my case, was the way in which the water can come out of the thing...
    The Philips have 3 modes:
    1. Normal, unfiltered, stream of water, just like a regular tap
    2. Filtered, comes out in a slight spray, but a small circle of water, perfect
    3. Normal, unfiltered, in a wide spray, this mode is great for washing the dishes and all that, I found other brands didn't have this option

That's probably the longest I'm ever going to write about a water filter... at least I hope it is..

While it is very nice, you could have made it more complete and nicer by including the price of the unit and the price of the filters

We used to use the Philips filter that you attach to the tap. It works well to remove the taste of chlorine, as any filter with activated carbon should. We found the filters, at least in our case, needed to be replaced every 3-4 months, and since the replacement filter costs about as much as the much larger Doulton filters, we switched to the more cost-effective solution.
