The Spoils of insomnia . . . While watching TV at 2am the other last night, I came across a show called "Guitar Center Sessions." It's half musical performance and half interview with an artist. The featured artist was "LP." Had never heard of her. She started singing and my eyes opened wide, a chill went down my back, and I leaned toward the TV. How is this woman not a star?

Her cover of Beyonce's "Halo" is incredible

    Skyhook and Cho-man like this.

Both great bands. I've seen FFAF 3 times.. Prefer the original line-up though.

Seen Deftones as well, this was before Chi Cheng had his Car accident. What do you think of their newer stuff? Around the fur is my Favourite.

I have seen funeral for a friend once (original) , great band, both current and original are decent. it's a band which truly support, my main music for my weekly drives to bath from Birmingham (10 years ago), they still have the edge as a post- hardcore band, even though they are not so mainstream

I will get their new album on CD - Chapter and Verse

Deftones, the radiohead of metal, forefront of envelope pushing metal, the best, even though Cheng Chi passed away, still have a Chinese connection ( Chino Moreno is half Chinese)

Around the fur is ok, but IMO ( my fave)

    White Pony
    Koi No Yokan
    Deftones
    Saturday Night Wrist
    Diamond Eyes
    Around the Fur

    I don't have adrenaline

FFAF - I haven't listened to any of their music since "Tales don't tell themselves". I take it the newer ones are good as well?

Deftones - There's a few decent songs in their newer albums but I still prefer around the fur, white pony or adrenaline.

I rank Diamond eyes equal to Around the fur.

FFAF, a lot of people don't like this, very pop orientated, almost boy band. if you want, pass a sd card or usb drive, I can pass over the newer stuff, definite more like " casually dressed and deep in conversation "

Now for music that is completely different, I've always wonder whether a piece of music would sound the same (or just as good) if sung in a different language. Or would it be received differently? Better or worse?

Take this song for example. This is the song "Always with me", its the ending melody for the Oscar-winning animated film "Spirited Away". Here is the original sung in Japanese:

Now here is the English version sung by Kiwi singer Hayley Westenra:

Which is better? Or are they the same?

hard to say, different artist vocals are in different style and from different culture, all has it's own advantages, comparison is slightly pointless

similar to brenda k starr, I still believe ( original artist) late 80's

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CI8gsPnCISY

Cantonese version by sandy lam early 90's

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OmXXWW7laDU

    Mariah carey version late 90's

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OAZG2duVte4

what is more comparable and more interesting, is the same song by same artist ( written by themselves) in different languages, ie, Placebo - Protect Me What I Want ( English) and it's French counterpart

Interesting point. But as to comparison being pointless, maybe not necessarily so. I am interested in how different cultures perceived a piece of music.

everyone has different perception of what they define as music as they differences in upbringing, cultures, different periods of time, etc,
