even McDonalds in Shatins New Town Plaza is relocating to another location in the area, due to unmanageable rent. Over 1 million hkd per month apparently

    Now that's really saying something....

Certainly in Causeway Bay the answer, if you are not a big chain, is not many.

Take a stroll around the Lee Theatre Plaza, Percival Street and Pak Sha Road area. The last time I counted there were over 14 boarded up shops just in that little area, and Perfume Garden, a great little Vietnamese resteraunt on Percival Street that has been there for decades, has been given it's marching orders with a massive rent increase.

It certainly feels that for the time being the top has been reached, and with yesterday's SCMP reporting that many of the big brand names like Chanel were cutting prices by 20+% to attract business, new highs in the rent market may be some way off now.

I have read online that they cut prices because of low Euro and so alotta people
import these luxury brands and then sell them through various channels

I saw something about Causeway Bay rents on the TV yesterday. The report seemed to be saying that landlords having to cut rents was a bad thing, and that the numbers of mainland tourists falling was also bad. With rents, I'd guess that the landlords have paid so much for the properties that they cannot afford to cut rents. Let's hope they go bankrupt. With the mainland tourists, when will the government realise that there are both costs and benefits to large numbers of tourist arrivals.
