On a single income I'd say up to 30 percent is a more realistic benchmark unless living deliberately frugally. And many spend more than that as the poll shows.

I wouldn't say up to 30, I would say normal is 30%. For a single person who is an expat in this city and doesn't want to live out in the sticks you don't really get decent living standards below 20k per month.

I would go as far as saying to have a decent flat in a good neighborhood 20-25k is the norm. That would still mean a salary of around 70-80k per month, which I presume most people would regard as a good salary for a single young(ish) person. A lot of people come here making 30/40/50k per month, how are they going to achieve below 30% rent?

Yeah I'm on 50k a month when I get there - small company, but enough to get me out there. It's impossible to get below 30% it seems! Even with rents going "down", most decent flats start at 20k in good areas from what I can see online. Of course might be different when I'm there and asking local agents. I'm single and in the 30s and I'm not too fussed with living out in NT, because if I was well, I wouldn't be able to afford nights out in Central anyway!
