Major fire in flat... What to do now?

A fire started in the living room while I was sleeping and luckily ran out of the flat without any physical damage. Fire services came to put it out.

However half my furniture was destroyed and other possessions covered in either soot or water. No structural damage to the flat other than walls covered with soot.

No renters' insurance but landlord has fire insurance. Anyone have any general advice or experience dealing with a fire in HK? I'm obviously staying elsewhere for now.

    What started the fire?

Get the flat cleaned up, and furnish it again?

Find out what the landlords insurance covers. Probably very little for your possessions and more around structural damage.

You can get free furniture from expats if you search online

Try and salvage your clothes through washing at launderette
Clean light soot/smoke damaged items with isopropyl alcohol, some are recoverable, will get of smoke smell (mostly), and all of the soot

If you have an expensive mattress, with only soot / smoke damaged, chemdry will clean it for around hkd1000-1200, great results, I have used their franchise throughout the world for my insurance job, but mostly for extensive mold damages, but works for smoke damaged even light wet damages

I just had a mate move out and threw out a ton of expensive G.O.D furniture - could have given you that!

What started fire in living room in the middle of summer? A candle?
