    Recommended charities in HK?

(trying to word this so it's not a humblebrag)

2016 has, at least on some levels, been a pretty shitty year - but mostly it's been ok for me... and thinking about what can we actually do to make 2017 less shitty, at least on some levels for some people...

So, regardless of what I might or might not give to anyone already, or in other ways, I'd like to get into a habit of a bit more giving - not massive, life-changing amounts, I should say...

But, slightly embarrassingly, I don't really know who to give to in HK.

Any suggestions? Who is doing good work in HK with people (or, I suppose, animals) who need support, need help?

    Ark Eden Foundation

You can try the above link, Ark Eden Foundation do a lot of environmental stuff. I remember volunteering once cleaning up a beach somewhere in Lantau, had to use Kayak to access it, the beach was freaking dirty.

A lot of it boils down to some very personal choices.

Animals vs children? Refugess vs ethnic minorities etc etc

Another qualifier for me is how much of that money is actually used for 'work' and not for 'admin / marketing'.

Wisegiving keeps a good list of charities you can start researching

Splash: Swimming Classes for Domestic Helpers – Helpwise Helper Management Training

Not sure if it's your thing, but an amazing charity, have helped out with it an am really impressed at how effective it is at teaching water safety and swimming skills, but also how empowering it is for the ladies and how much fun they have as well. The courses are free for the helpers, and always oversubscribed within minutes of a new season being started.

    Child Sponsorship Programme

These children have so very little, not even parents to love and nurture them.

Obviously when looking at charities you need a chart....

There are few ways to look at giving to charity

    1) Something that makes you feel better about yourself
    2) Something that should be have a socialised burden but doesn't
2a) Innovative charity pushing the boundaries of provision with innovation
2b) Recurrent charity that becomes a de facto social service (pretty similar to franchised bus service for transport industry)

unfortunately many people naturally focus on charities that give them fulfillment (all those fluffy animal and air ambulance charities) rather than focussing on social need.

If you are looking to give to a charity please choose one that helps society and is innovative.
