    Road accident scam

I am angry and frustrated. I just gave in to a road accident scam. Had to stop the legal fees haemorrage. One of those “poor old ladies” pushing heavy carts on hk streets just won a case. She threw herself on my car and claimed hk$750 000 for a booboo on her foot......2 years after it happened. So of course my insurance did not take the case into consideration. I have no income myself but my husband helped.
Of course they don’t take big risks on these scams : my car was hardly moving. And as much as I try, what she claims happened is IMPOSSIBLE. try to get my car to run over your foot : you really need to stretch your foot forward for it to get run over by my front wheel. And has to be a very long foot too ......

Might be worth reading this thread. Been known to happen and surprising that the courts still allow this sort of shit to continue.

No clue how the courts or the law enforcers in this town can prevent these scams.. but worth noting that if you're driving, better have front and rear cams on your car, and make sure they work and you can retrieve videos.

A select few law firms specialise in "helping" the "victims" collect on these sort of incidents.

    Car accident scam

    Hi
thanks everyone for your fast and sympathetic answers
no, insurance does not help because the charges were pressed 2 years after the “accident” !
The scammer got legal aid. They are the ones who claimed that crazy sum.
We made a lower offer to avoid long and costly legal fees. The plaintiff accepted the offer.
But then I am the loser of the case and need to pay her legal costs on top of mine.
The total almost amounts to what she claimed initially.
    Hence the anger and frustration......

@Cbabette - sorry that this was such an expensive ordeal for you. Seems like the best thing to do is to report any incident, no matter how trivial to the cops (another joke...) and your insurance company to protect yourself.

Yeah, but the time machine needed to mount the dashcam in 2016 is >750k

I have learned my lesson. Will get a dash cam, but I am scared to even take the wheel again. Don’t think I am going to drive anymore.
Thanks everyone for being so kind and understanding. It’s so nice to have you around to help with our ordeals here.

This is why you see even a minor fender bender, both cars do not move and wait for the police to take pictures and file a report and the whole road gets clogged up. No one takes risks.
