Sure, Skype is one of the better VoIP providers out there, if not the best, but their charges are FAR from competitive. I've personally found other providers (Jajah, Jaxtr, Rebtel) to have MUCH better pricing. Calls to India and to UK Mobiles (according to current rates) using Skype are over a dollar a minute to India and over 2 dollars a minute to UK mobiles(including the connection fees that everyone conveniently seems to ignore).
Picking up the phone and using an IDD service like PCCW is hands-down the easier option and probably even cheaper overall. Last I checked....promo rates to India...$0.58/min and to UK mobiles $1.38. You do the math...
Skype alternatives I came up with that charge less:
Jajah (
JAJAH - web-activated telephony)
Rebtel (
Cheap international mobile calls - Rebtel provider - Rebtel)
It's all a matter of being aware of what you're being charged and just shopping around to get a better deal....no different from what you normally do everyday, really!
