    Red face Community Service

I have heard and seen many places in Hong Kong and Shenzhen where small groups appeal for financial aid, second-hand items and volunteers. But most of them need Cantonese or Mandarin speaking people.

Any advice on places where an English-speaking volunteer could help by spending time would help? Orphanages... New born centres... ??? I have been trying to find a place, but haven't got success as yet.

Would appreciate any leads I could get.

    SoCO needs English volunteers!

If you can speak English, the little learning centre of SoCO needs you! The centre is holding free English courses for poor children of the area in Sham Shui Po in order to improve the social mobility of this particular group of people -- we are always short of committed tutors! You can visit SoCo's site at http://www.soco.org.hk/. If you are interested in, you can write to me at [email protected]

I am nowing working as a volunteer there, hoping to plan out some effective programmes...

The YMCA at Cheung Sha Wan, is a community service centre, doing the same initiative working with the 'disadvantage population' in the neighborhood. Working on several initiatives such as English, life skills training and a mentor scheme.

kemmiss with the two organizations relatively close to each other too bad they don't consider combing resources such as one organization does the planning of the teaching/training another recruits and trains the volunteers.
