Question Married in the US getting a divorce in HK?

    Hi All,

Long story short, I got married in the US with a HK woman.

But after 7 years we've decided to go our separate ways. We've been living in HK for the past few years, and living separately for 2 years.

What's the official procedure to get divorced and that it'll be recognized by the states?Any good lawyer recommendations that won't charge you a fortune?

    Thanks,

    K

See here for official procedure. https://www.judiciary.hk/en/court_se...s/divorce.html

If you both agree to the divorce, and are still on speaking terms, do you need a lawyer? (I don't know - just asking)

should be quite straight forward, fill in the form, both sign and hand in, save lawyer costs.

The divorce part is easy and straightforward if both parties agree. The financial settlement is typically where things bog down, assuming no children.

If there are no major shared assets like a house, flat, or car, then probably also pretty easy as long as neither party is seeking any kind of spousal support.

So if no financial issues and assets are already divided between the two of you (or you don't have any major assets) then have a go without a lawyer and save some bucks.

If you do need outside assistance with financial division of assets, try using a mediator who can draw up an agreement very quickly and in a cost-effective manner (I did mediation in the US and it was very fast and painless).
