Question Moving: Average Cost of living for 2 and cat

    Hi Everyone,

I have received an offer from a company go to Hong Kong and to set up a new office there, acting as MD. They asked me to give them my salary requirements including all overtime. Rent and all related utilities are paid by the company as well as the very basic furnishings.

My partner will not be able to work there, so I will need to "provide" for us both as well as my cat.

I currently make EUR 45K per year, which provides for a good lifestyle of eating out, most lunches (takeout) and dinner 2 to 3 times a week with some nice wine and fairly excesive clubbing once a week in Vienna. Also, I want my partner to be able to actually do things while I'm sitting at the office all day!

The job would be much more demanding and it was suggested to me by someone who used to live in HK to ask for EUR 100 K, which seems a bit exhorbinate. So my questions are:

    1) What is the average percetage of taxes to wages?
    2) Would 30,000HKD per month be sufficient for the lifestyle I described above for 2-30Somethings?
    3) Does anyone have experience with what an "normal" salary would be for the MD of a starting-up IT equipment import/exporter?

Also, any information on importing pets would be very helpfull.

Thanks in advance for any information!

Startup salaries are usually fairly hard to predict, as there is a risk associated and fairly often compensation based on those risks (stock options etc). Startups tend to be either cash starved or cash rich .. rare to find one which is balanced.

If you can control rent and other fixed expenses -- you're ok. However, rent can take up a fair amount of your package. These days we're seeing an upward cycle with rent.. (No middle ground with HK .. we're on a perpetual expand and burst cycle like there is no tommorrow).

Once rent is taken care of $1000/day is decent enough to have a good time and buy some quality catnip, which will keep the husband and the feline busy.
