Your favourite and least favourite beaches in HK?

As the temperature heats up and the humidity rises, summer is well and truly here. My least preferable time of the year in this city. But there is one silver lining, going to beaches on weekends to cool off in the sea with a nice swim. So that naturally brings to mind one thing, which is your favourite and least favourite beaches in HK?

Generally the less accessible ones are the nicest. Of the ones that do not require these ricketty knees to use hiking poles for access, Hung Shing Yeh is nice, at least when I have a mid-week day off. Golden/ Cafeteria is my local and it's fine for an after-work swim and watching the sun go down.

My least favourites are the ones which disappear at high tide, like Angler's and Castle Peak. Oh, and I only ever went to Butterfly once because the "sand" appeared to be mostly mud and builders' rubbish and on the grassed area behind had one of the highest concentrations of bitey insects I have encountered in HK.

Our Faves: Shek O Beach and the smaller one to the right of Stanley main beach near the water sports windsurfing sailing club. which was a nice shore shaded little part of the beach which was excellent for young kids and never found that part crowded. Shek o beach was busier but it had places you could have a refreshing drink at one of the kiosk's that fringe it where you could watch you kids from a distance. Then once done at the beach, walk through Shek o town, get some thai food and then pop into Lu Lu's and grab a couple of drinks with some long term colonial expats, having a bit of a chin wag and then make the hour long drive back to Sai Kung where we lived. We almost bought a place in Shek O, had we decided to stay in HK I would have pulled the trigger and bought a place there to retire ( as was our original long term plan ) had we been more optimistic about Hong Kong's future. Loved Shek O as it's a nice quirky little spot. We had a lot of our wedding photo's done in Tai Tam, Stanley, Shek O etc.

I like Gold Coast the best as there's no effort to be made on my part for getting there I need only to take a 24 hour red minibus and it's only about 45 minutes there and back and the minibus terminates minutes away from my flat.

Hong Kong beaches, choose two of the following...

Beautiful golden sand and crystal sea
Easily accessible without three busses, a taxi and an hour-long hike
    Not too many people

The nicest ones are the least accessible. Had a lovely overnight camp on Tai Long Wan Beach in Sai Kung Country park recently. Beautiful clean and unspoilt. Could have easily been confused with any idilic beach in a expensive holiday destination.

Ham tin next door is nice too with a few restaurants, or Long Ke Wan near the High island dam.

Beaches on south coast of Lantau lovely too.

Google shows Tai Long Wan Beach on Lantau. Easier to get to than Tai Wan in Sai Kung
