depends on turnover and how helpful they are. i give at least $100 to the ones in my building. more to the snr ones. it just makes my day to day life much easier.

The norm is to give Lai See in pairs, as good things come in pairs ( 好事成雙 ), but no one will complain if it’s 1 envelope.

Any combination of the following depending on how well you know them and if it’s in your development or visiting friends. Also depends on the size of your development.

Big Development (Many staff)
$10 + $10 = $20
$20 + $20 = $40
$50 + $50 = $100
$100 + $100 = $200

Small Development (Only few staff)
$50 + $50 = $100
$100 + $100 = $200
$200 + $300 = $500
$500 + $500 = $1000

That depends on your building. If you live in a walk-up in Sham Shui Po you can probably get away with $20. If you live in a townhouse on the Peak even $100 would be insulting.

For me, 50 (my vote) would be the minimum. I lived in a very small development on Peng Chau (walk up) and only two cleaners, I think I gave 100 each. I also think I may have done the same in a Christmas card, hopeless gweilo that I am and getting a Christmas present being super important.

My part-time cleaner in Taipei gets a month (same on Peng Chau) and I also gave like 3 weeks' salary "bonus" in a Christmas card because, hey, they can learn about my traditions as well...
