    Weird habits about the West

Since you've moved to HK, or Asia, have you noticed things about your home country that now seem strange/quirky/funny when you visit?

For example, I now find it really peculiar to have a tiny cup and a tiny spoon for a boiled egg. It feels like they're performing a ceremony. Reminds me of that Seinfeld episode when they eat a snickers with a knife and fork.

Where I live now -- which is also a foreign country to me -- I find the extremely loud nose blowing, as if trying to draw public attention to the buggers in their nasal cavity absolutely horrendous. Yet, the very same people would turn heads and raise eyebrows as high as the sky if someone slurps their noodles. Completely random.

I also think children in school not wearing a mask when they are clearly symptomatic with a cold or something worse is disgusting. Debate all you want about the effectiveness of masks and microorganisms, but one thing it DOES do it keep those little hands away from touching the virus-carrying liquids on their face!!!

    Charging for tap water...

    Wearing shoes inside *shudder*...

I could go on and on... I'm not done here (see other post ).

Well, a giant spoon wouldn't work as well.

Yes I agree with most of that. My dad still uses a hanky to blow his nose and of course when he's done it goes back in his pocket. How they get washed I don't know. Usually if I need to blow my nose at work I'll go to the washroom.

I do love slurping my soup and tea at home though, mainly to draw the ire of my wife.

    .
I hate masks, people are so obsessed with them in clueless HK it "boils my piss" to paraphrase the thick Geordie mentioned in the Carbs thread.

But ho hum, now I find myself in the annoying position of having to defend what they do well.

They catch droplets (micro/macro) that sick people spray out at high speed when they sneeze (your hand is also pretty good at that too) and they catch droplets they spray a little when one talks etc.

If they stop people from touching their face, that is effectively completely meaningless. Nobody should give a shit if a kid has a respiratory virus on their fingers. Respiratory viruses really have to be inhaled to have a fair chance of infecting someone - SURFACES ARE NOT A MEANIGFUL VECTOR FOR TRANSMISSION

    Public service announcement over.

What I also wrote but didn't post is that there's a tradition of shaking hands - with the teacher - every lesson. So I don't care what you say, it is gross and I don't want to touch their hands and have been wiping their maskless noses!!! It's just ewww.

Not wanting snot on your hand is very reasonable.

I'd prefer them to learn how to use a tissue, rather than breathe through a plastic film all day.
