If there are 3 or more cars, people have to mentally track who has precedence.
Most civilised societies have 4-way stops - they just moved on and added traffic lights

"Why Roundabouts" from the Transport Department of Springfield, Oregon
    Why Roundabouts.htm

And "How to drive a 2-lane roundabout", from same.
    Driving a roundabout.htm

Seems that after all this time, roundabouts are beginning to catch on in the US.

Another important thing to consider is whether its more fuel efficient to Stop, Idle, and Go at a light, or go around in a roundabout.

Guess that depends on how many times you go around...anybody watch National Lampoon's European Vacation?

    You're kidding, I hope?

I'm pretty sure it's more fuel efficient to travel the extra 2 metres around a roundabout than to bring 2 tons of metal to a complete standstill and then accellerate it again to cruising speed.

And not forgetting less greenhouse emissions by not having 4 sets of traffic lights on 24/7
