Instead of roundabouts, there is the idiotic 4-way stop. Every car must stop, even if it's the only car in sight. And if there are multiple cars approaching from multiple directions, right of way goes to whoever got there first, which encourages people to speed up to get to the intersection first (and then hit the brakes anyway). If there are 3 or more cars, people have to mentally track who has precedence.

Most civilised societies have 4-way stops - they just moved on and added traffic lights

I'm pretty sure it's more fuel efficient to travel the extra 2 metres around a roundabout than to bring 2 tons of metal to a complete standstill and then accellerate it again to cruising speed.
