    Favourite HK haunts

I'm doing a bit of digging from comp seat rather than get sweaty in town searching - and want to know everyone's favourite things to do in HK. I have done all the tourist trap stuff and now I want to know the nitty gritty stuff everyone does. Fav restaurants, bars, hairdressers (that is quite important currently), shops and places to go. I have a fair list of my own but a few months in it is getting a little tired.

can't wait to see where I should tramp next!

there's an island you can get a ferry to that's 90 mins away up near china. it only runs on saturdays and sundays and is usually packed - but the island's a welcome get away from the hustle and bustle. i suppose you want more details? like the name?!

    Bars...

If you feel like having a bit of a long night. Grab a few friends and head to Tai Wai for a pub crawl. It's pretty local, but there's are a few places to eat and about 7 pubs and most places will work their English to to help you out.

Tung Ping Chau I think. You get the ferry from the wharf by Tai Po Market station.

Or you can try joining a hike with us: http://www.meetup.com/Hong-Kong-Hiking-Meetup-Group/

Yes, it's Tung Ping Chau. I mentioned it on the other thread as I went camping there. But the ferry leaves from University station, not Tai Po.

The ferry to Tung Ping Chau runs out of a pier by the University Station. Link to the ferry service: http://www.traway.com.hk/routes.html. You can walk to the pier from the station, just follow the sign to the bike trail. Or take a green mini van outside the station.

You may also want to try Tap Mun and Po Tai islands. For Po Tai, the ferry runs from Stanley. Po Tai is quite windy but fun to go.

For restaurants, you may want to try the restaurants in Tai Hang by Tin Hau Station. Take A1 Exit, cross the tram lines and walk towards the Welcome. There are a bunch of restaurants/bistros along that tree-lined street (I think it's called Tung Lo Wan Rd).

    Tung Ping Chau

Just out of curiosity about Tung Ping Chau, what interesting activities a person can possibly do in visiting that place? Is it as simple as being a good place or a relaxing place to go to, or are there nice restaurants that a visitor can't afford to miss? Is this a historical site? etc. I am asking this questions based on zero knowledge about the said place. Hoping someone can help, I am a bit interested. Thanks.

Based on one visit last year with my hiking group ... it's a dump!

There is a restaurant (singular) attached to a place that also rents out snorkelling and other watery type gear, but the beach was FILTHY when we were there - absolutely covered in rubbish, unbelievable.

The island is tiny, you can walk all the way around it in a about 2 hours. The walk is easy and pleasant and there are some interesting coastal rock formations (the place is a marine park because of these).

There are places to camp and if the beach were clean it would be a nice spot to hang out and read a book etc, but as I said, it's close to China, near a shipping lane and it just seems to attract rubbish (bottles, other plastic, netting, gloves, socks, shoes, you name it, you can find it on the beach).

We spent about 4 hours there and took the early ferry home.

This is the info on the hike (including photo's) from our meetup group which would give you more insight.
