Shakes use the same ice cream mix ie soft serve component, and regarding cooking oils, I am pretty sure they use transfats ie Hydrogenated vegetable oil to cook them, but don't quote me on that.

While we are on this subject, KFC use big blocks of LARD as their gravy base for their potato and gravy products. LARD is rendered or clarified pig fat, for those that don't know.

On a healthy point of view, LARD is generally a lot better for you than Trans fats, as it is 40 percent saturated fat, and 45% monounsaturated fat.

Most pie bakers use LARD also as it produces the flakiest & tastiest pastry.

Hong Kong must be the worst place on Earth for Muslims, because like it or not, unknowingly, lots of things are cooked using LARD, or cross contaminated with it.

There's probably also lard in Dairy Farm (Nestle) ice cream... the ingredients simply say "fat" without giving its origin, which I would have thought contravened HK labelling laws.

Hong Kong McDs may use different ingredients in its ice cream and shakes from the Australian ones. For example, in HK the fries are fried in beef fat but not so in many other countries.

IMO, it's always better to eat real food not the industralised stuff.

Yet again some people quote urban myth as reality.

Quick check of McDonalds - required by law - ingredients listing shows no sign of pig fat. Sorry to burst some peoples bubble but this info is very easy to find.
McDonald's USA - USA Core Menu Items by Ingredients

Of course all the hippies will come back and say its all propaganda, but in a land where someone can sue you for spilling coffee ( over themselves, whilst driving ) then you had better be sure that they do what is says on the label.

FYI - Macdonalds have ingredients / Calories flyers in all their outlets world wide. My recollection of HK is its on the back of the paper cover they put on your tray. This is all making me hungry must rush down the street and get supersized - again !

    Boris,

The ingredients in the US are significantly different from those in other countries in many cases.

    {edit - shri's link below seems to address the question}

    McDonald's

    Cooking Oils
McDonald's Hong Kong uses vegetable oils to cook all friend products like Filet-O-Fish, French Fries, McNuggets and Apple Pies.
Is there reason to believe that they're lying on their Hong Kong website??

the risk of a little fat is overrated

unless you are a health freak, you probably get as much fat from your chocolate or crisps at lunch... and maybe that croissant in the morning...

iv never expected to diet whilst eating ice-cream as it is not the healthiest food... so whether it is lard or vegetable oil... it doesnt really matter

remember... balance is the key! eat a little of everything and not a lot of anything!
