Historical road signs on Old Peak Road? Where to find picture?

    Hi all

    weird question but ...

I am teaching about racism (in a secondary school) and want to make reference to a sign which I am told used to be on old Peak Road that said 'no chinese past this point unless they are carriers' or something like this.

Any ideas if it did exist? and where i can find a picture? a google search hasn't been much help

    thanks in advance

Ah, the ol' Peak District Reservation Ordinance of 1904... It's probably in a book somewhere. Perhaps print out the References of this paper and head off to Hong Kong Central Library.

Here's a reference if you need one.

    and

    Such signs did exist.

    Here's an image search ...

hong kong "no dogs and chinese" - Google Image Search

Lots of copies of the same photo (which was supposedly in a Bruce Lee movie).... good enough for a class I'd say...

I was intrigued by this and on googling found a horrifying story of child labour being used to haul coal up to the Peak for 8 cents a day. This references a book which might have photos.

    How about an uptodate one?

at the end of the poster for the show
was special pricing for Children and Domestic Helpers!

I even offered to be the designated domestic helper for the evening, but was refused due to the fact that my date was considered too old to be a child!

Here's a bit of trivia from my vast reserves of very sad Bruce Lee facts...the park gate in the film above (in Fist of Fury) is actually Luis De Camoes garden in Macau. The gate is still there and looks exactly the same - minus the dude with the turban and the sign.

What! The Macau authorities didn't put the sign back together after Bruce shattered it?
